Mr Ahmed Al-Bahrani

I am Ahmed Al-Bahrani, a General Surgeon specialising in benign and malignant Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, based at Watford General Hospital since January 2011. I am the lead clinician of the Upper GI Cancer Centre for Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire; part of Beds and Herts (Mount Vernon previously) Cancer Network. Currently, I cover West Hertfordshire (Watford General, St Albans City and Hemel Hempstead hospitals) and East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals (Lister and QEII hospitals). 

I have undergone comprehensive training for open and laparoscopic Upper GI, Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB), Hernia and General Surgery in the UK and overseas. My specialist training (SpR) was based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Cambridge) and other hospitals in the East of England. With experience of over 6000 cases operated on, including over 3000 Upper GI cases, I am confident dealing with different Upper GI and General conditions. 

At West Hertfordshire Hospitals Trust (WHHT), I am currently: 

• Clinical Director - General Surgery

• Lead Clinician - Upper Gastrointestinal Unit.

• Lead of the National OG Cancer Audit at Cancer Network Level

• Lead of the Enhanced Recovery Programme for Upper GI

• Member of the Divisional Quality Governance Committee for Surgery

At Hertfordshire and South Bedfordshire Regions, I am additionally:

• Lead for Oesophago-Gastric Cancer at Beds & Herts Specialist Multi-disciplinary Treatment

• Tutor and assessor at the London General Surgical Skills Programme

One of my major achievements is the introduction of the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP) in Oesophago-Gastric (OG) Cancer Resection at Watford General Hospital (WGH), which will ensure a safe, smooth and short uneventful recovery following major cancer surgery. Our centre is one of the few centres in UK that conduct such a programme for similar cases. The overall feedback I have received from patients, relatives and professionals is generally positive.

My private practice, as an Upper GI and Laparoscopic Surgeon, is based at both Spire Bushey and Spire Harpenden Hospitals with regular clinics and theatre sessions.
